Skyscraper Puzzles

In February, blog post nearly a new-to-me logic puzzle called Skyscrapers.  As shortly every bit I read the post, I *knew* I needed to purpose this puzzle inwards my classroom.  I fifty-fifty sent my husband a link, gushing nearly how amazing these puzzles were!

The puzzles from the brainbashers.com website weren't quite the correct size to purpose amongst my linking cubes (affiliate link), together with hence I didn't purpose the puzzle amongst my students correct away.

Well, I procrastinated long plenty that Mark Chubb did the travel for me.  He has posted PDFs on his website that incorporate ii skyscraper puzzles to a page that are the perfect size for linking cubes (affiliate link).

I printed off the four x four puzzles inwards a packet.  Each grouping got a bundle of puzzles together with 50 linking cubes.

Next, I instructed my students that nosotros were edifice a metropolis total of skyscrapers.

See the numbers simply about the border of the puzzle?  These numbers tell you lot how many skyscrapers you lot tin run across from that advantage point.

My students were VERY confused past times this at first!  How inwards the footing could it hold out possible to run across 1 skyscraper from ane side together with iii skyscrapers from the other side?  When they figured it out, their expressions were priceless!

Once my students got over their initial confusion, they were off!

I didn't actually acquire a 2nd of remainder because my grouping afterwards grouping afterwards grouping needed their solutions checked.

After my students caught on to how the puzzle worked, they were knocking out the puzzles quite quickly.  I want I would convey printed off some of the bigger puzzles for this exact reason!

There was SO much skilful grouping travel together with conversations going on spell students were solving these puzzles.

It reminded me a lot of the activities I tried from Cohen's Designing Groupwork (affiliate link) at the initiatory of all of the schoolhouse year.

I knew this activeness was a winner when students stayed AFTER the bell rang together with hence I could cheque their latest solution.

When my students came to degree the side past times side day, they were devastated to acquire that nosotros would non hold out doing to a greater extent than skyscraper puzzles.

As nosotros started our activeness that day, students kept making remarks nearly how doing to a greater extent than skyscraper puzzles would hold out to a greater extent than fun.

It was together with hence fun to take away heed them part their theories nearly the best agency to translate the clues amongst their grouping mates.  It's together with hence keen to overheard a pupil say excitedly, "Wait, I convey a theory!"

I convey successfully used these puzzles amongst students ranging from Math Concepts (a degree for ninth graders non nonetheless laid for Algebra 1) to Algebra 1 to Trigonometry.  They all loved them!

For ane of my afternoon classes, I told the students that each grouping would ask to successfully consummate ii skyscraper puzzles to have their 10 participation points for the day.  If they did to a greater extent than than this, I would laissez passer them a few extra credit points.

I wrote this formula on the board to help students calculate the points they had earned. This led to some awesome conversations.  A grouping of students were trying to figure out how many points they would acquire if they stopped afterwards completing half dozen puzzles.  Some of the grouping members insisted that they would acquire xviii points.  Other grouping members were adamant that they would hold out getting 48 points.  It turned into a keen large give-and-take nearly club of operations!

These Tents puzzles tin hold out establish here on the Brain Bashers website.

I created a one-page introduction alongside the rules for these Tents puzzles to give to my students.

Then, I used my snipping tool to view several puzzles for my students to drive their hands at.

I didn't truly drive whatever of these puzzles out for myself earlier giving them to my students.

Here's how my commencement puzzle went:

I persuasion I was doing good, in addition to thence of a abrupt things merely stopped falling into place.  I had no persuasion where/when I had made a error alongside my logic.  My students also truly struggled alongside this commencement puzzle.

I'm happy to written report that I did much improve alongside the subsequent puzzles!

One of my students came dorsum from Spring Break maxim she had done approximately of the puzzles over suspension in addition to truly enjoyed them.  I telephone telephone that a win!

I've uploaded the file I created to innovate my students to these puzzles here.

Slants Puzzles from Brainbashers.com

In the terminal few days earlier Spring Break, a large subdivision of my students were gone for diverse reasons.  I decided it was non an ideal fourth dimension to offset a construct novel unit of measurement inward trigonometry.  So, I went looking for a novel logic puzzle to innovate my trig students to.  Many of these students accept been inward my math classes since they were eighth graders, together with then they've seen almost all of the puzzles I accept upward my sleeve.

I constitute these interesting looking slant puzzles from brainbashers.com.  I created a one-page introduction amongst the rules for these puzzles to give to my students.

Then, I used my snipping tool to select handgrip of several puzzles for my students to endeavour their hands at.

If I was going to role these amongst my students again, I would construct a MUCH bigger bargain close the "Loops are non allowed" rule.  Many of my students ignored this rule...

I enjoyed these puzzles myself.  I await forrard to doing to a greater extent than of them inward the future.

Square Pi Puzzle For Pi Day

Since this side past times side calendar week is saltation break, my students in addition to I celebrated an early on Pi Day on Friday, March 10th.  Most of the activities nosotros did were my commons "go-to" pi solar daytime activities.  We had a contender to run across who could memorize the virtually digits of pi.  We wrote pi-kus (think haiku but amongst iii - 1 - iv syllables inwards each line).  We searched for our birthdays inwards the digits of pi.  We watched around pi solar daytime themed Youtube videos.  We ate agency also many sweets.

This year, though, I establish a novel persuasion that I HAD to try!  It all started when a I did a google images search for "pi solar daytime puzzle."  I ran across this "Easy As Pi Puzzle" from MathIsFun.com

The solution to the puzzle notes that the puzzle was created past times Stephen Froggatt.

I copied in addition to pasted the puzzle to a Publisher file in addition to thence I could impress ii to a page.

I uploaded the file I created for this puzzle here.

I printed the puzzles on dissimilar colors of newspaper in addition to laminated them using my trusty Scotch laminator (affiliate link).  First, I cutting out the pi shapes.

Then, I cutting apart the pi shaped puzzles into the 5 private pieces.  Each puzzle went into its ain snack sized bag.  I purchase these inwards the biggest box Wal-mart sells.  They come upward inwards in addition to thence useful for all of the activities I practice for my classroom!

As I was cutting out these pieces, I was multi-tasking in addition to reading my electronic mail at the same time.

I opened Chris Smith's maths newsletter (subscribe past times e-mailing Chris at aap03102@gmail.com) in addition to establish the real same puzzle!

Each pupil took out their pocketbook to honor 5 pieces.

I told them that their starting fourth dimension challenge was to brand a foursquare using all 5 pieces.  Some students protested that nosotros had already done this before.  I told them nosotros had done a similar puzzle, but this 1 was different.  If you're interested inwards to a greater extent than puzzles similar this, I recommend the 1-4-5 Square Challenge.  I also conduct hold a tub of tangrams (affiliate link) inwards my room that nosotros purpose occasionally.

I kinda persuasion making the foursquare was going to travel TOO slow because I was able to position it together on my starting fourth dimension try.  But, my students establish this to travel enough difficult!  Many of them gave up.

Here is how 1 of my students interpreted the foursquare challenge:

I had many students telephone telephone me over in addition to enquire if something similar this counted every bit a square.

See, hither is around other pupil bespeak me if this counts every bit a square.

Finally soul figures it out!  See, it is possible!

One of my students ended upward making an isosceles triangle instead of a square.

The mo challenge for students was to conduct hold their 5 pieces in addition to brand the pi symbol.

I taped 1 of my uncut pi symbols on the board in addition to thence that students could run across just what the pi symbol was supposed to aspect like.  When I gave this challenge to my husband, he created a pi-ish symbol, but it wasn't just what I was expecting.

Usually my students' starting fourth dimension answer on seeing the pi cast was to country that it would travel impossible to practice using their 5 pieces.  They didn't believe me when I told them that I had cutting apart that real pi symbol to brand their 5 pieces!

Oh, I justice it is possible!

This activeness is definitely a pi-day keeper!  File uploaded here.
